To enable 2FA for Fortnite, sign in at epicgames.com, open Password and security, then choose Set up for your preferred method under Two-Factor Authentication. You need it to send gifts, and it's the most useful thing you can do to protect your account.

How to turn on 2FA

  1. Go to epicgames.com in a browser and sign in.
  2. Open your account page and select Password and security.
  3. Find Two-Factor Authentication.
  4. Choose Set up next to the method you want.
  5. Follow the on-screen steps and enter the code it gives you.

Which method should you use?

An authenticator app is the strongest common choice, as the code stays on your phone. Epic also offers SMS and email. Email is better than nothing, but it's only as secure as your email account, so give that a strong, unique password too.

How gifting works

Epic's gifting rules:

Rule Requirement
2FA Must be turned on
Your account Level 2 or higher
The recipient On your friends list for at least 2 days
Limit 5 gifts per 24 hours
Refunds All gifts are non-refundable

How to send a gift

  1. Open the Item Shop and select the item.
  2. Choose the gift option.
  3. Pick the friend from the list and confirm.

If the gift option isn't there or a friend is greyed out, check the table above. Those are the usual reasons. A friend may already own it. You also can't gift Battle Pass levels, V-Bucks or packs containing them, Fortnite Crew, items not currently in the shop, or passes bought with V-Bucks. Only passes bought with real money can be gifted.

Before you send anything

  • Check the name carefully. Gifts can't be refunded, so a mistake is final.
  • Make sure your friend doesn't already own it.
  • Plan ahead for birthdays. New friends need to have been on your list for two days.

If a pass is sent as a gift, Epic says an unused pass gift token converts to V-Bucks at the end of the season. Pass gifting is turned off towards the end of each season.

Spotting gift and account scams

  • "Gift me first and I'll gift you back." You can't refund that gift, so you've nothing to fall back on.
  • Fake Epic staff. Nobody needs your password or 2FA code. Never share them.
  • Free skin links. These usually lead to a fake login page. Sign in only through epicgames.com, typed in yourself.
  • Account sellers. Accounts can be taken back by the original owner, and trading them is against Epic's rules.

FAQ

Is 2FA required for Fortnite? It's required to send gifts in Fortnite. It's also required for some competitive events. You can play without it otherwise, but your account is safer with it on.

Why can't I gift in Fortnite? Usually it's because 2FA is off, your account is below level 2, or your friend hasn't been on your list for two days. You may also have reached the limit of 5 gifts in 24 hours, and a recipient with a negative V-Bucks balance can't receive gifts.

Can I refund a Fortnite gift? No. Epic says all gifts are non-refundable.

How many gifts can I send a day? Five per 24 hours.
